Muslim youth volunteer to help German elderly amid coronavirus fears

Muslim youth are volunteering to meet the needs of Germany’s elderly population amid coronavirus fears in Berlin.

Muslim youth are working around the clock at the Medina Mosque Association as they hit the markets to buy groceries and medicine for the elderly over 60 and for those with compromised immune systems, and then safely deliver the goods to their homes.

German elders can request assistance from the Medina Mosque to cover their basic needs such as food and medicine by email or phone.

Upon receiving the request, Muslim youth go shopping for the elderly and then deliver the items to the homes of the needy.

"We are afraid to leave the house and are trying to protect ourselves. When we heard about available assistance from Medina Mosque, we called them for help and mosque youth immediately delivered our groceries. God bless them," said Turan Ozcan, a 62-year-old man living in Berlin.

Germany is the third-worst-affected country by the coronavirus pandemic in Europe, after Italy and Spain.
The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the country rose to 9,877 as of Wednesday morning.

The coronavirus death toll has reached to 26, according to statements by local health authorities.
